The loaded device is placed with the muzzle in the exposed mouse tunnel, cocked, and released. After a short time, the vole will attempt to close the tunnel again, as it neither likes light nor fresh air. The vole pushes dirt in front of it, triggering the self-firing mechanism. The animal is killed instantly.
